5 volts, 80 amps, 400 watts — built-in power supply in a metal case
The MEAN WELL UHP-500-5 is an enclosed built-in power supply with 5 V and 400 W, universal input and active power factor correction. The output is adjustable from 4.5 to 5.5 V. It is cooled without a fan and is only 31 mm high — for this it must be mounted on an aluminium plate.

Is it right for my project?
What this power supply is made for
- 5 V pixels and 5 V pixel strips such as WS2812B, SK6812 or APA102 — around 1.300 RGB pixels at full brightness
- Installation in control cabinets, distribution boards and enclosures: 232 × 81 × 31 mm
- Universal input 90–264 V AC / 127–370 V DC — the same unit for mains worldwide
- Exact voltage at the load: output adjustable from 4.5 to 5.5 V
What it is not for
- 12 V devices — see the 12 volt power supplies
- Other ratings and designs are under power supplies
- Outdoor use, damp environments or use without an enclosure: it is a built-in power supply for dry rooms, not a weatherproof unit
- Connection by non-specialists: the 230 V mains connection must be made by a qualified electrician
Also required: a mains lead with earth conductor, an installation location with protection against contact and fusing of the outputs. For the UHP-500-5 also an aluminium plate as mounting surface (size per datasheet).

Protected and monitored
- Overload: from 110–140 % of rated power the power supply switches to hiccup mode and recovers automatically once the fault is removed

Mounting on an aluminium plate: The UHP-500-5 must be screwed with its underside flat onto an aluminium plate or a housing panel of the same size, centred and on an even surface (or with thermal paste). Only then do the derating curve and rated values in the datasheet apply.
Connection
Up and running in four steps
- Work de-energised. Before any installation, disconnect the system from the mains and secure it against being switched back on.
- Mount. Screw it flat onto the aluminium plate (see above). Keep ventilation openings clear and keep 10–15 cm away from other heat sources; other mounting orientations and high ambient temperatures require derating per the datasheet. Only use fixing screws of the length stated in the datasheet.
- Connect the output. Loads to −V and +V, distribute the current across all output terminals. Choose the conductor cross-section according to the current per lead — the table is in the installation manual; fuse each feed individually.
- Connect the mains and switch on. Connect L, N and the earth conductor; the earth conductor (FG) must be connected to earth. After switching on, measure the voltage at the load and adjust at the potentiometer if necessary.
Caution: The output voltage must suit your pixels — 5 V pixels do not tolerate overvoltage. Never set the potentiometer above the value stated by the pixel manufacturer.

Safety instructions
- Risk of electric shock: installation and mains connection by a qualified electrician only; have faults checked by a specialist. Do not open the case.
- Do not install in places with high humidity or near water.
- Do not operate at high ambient temperature or near sources of fire. Operating temperature −30 to +70 °C; at high temperatures and in other mounting orientations the load must be reduced (derating curve in the datasheet).
- Output current and output power must not exceed the rated values (80 A, 400 W).
- The power supply is a component for installation in end equipment; electromagnetic compatibility must be re-verified in the finished installation.

Frequently asked questions
How many pixels can I power with it?
As a rule of thumb, an RGB pixel draws around 60 mA at full brightness in white. 80 A is therefore enough for about 1,300 pixels. In operation with colours and dimmed effects the current is usually much lower; the pixel manufacturer's figures are decisive. Plan some reserve instead of running the power supply permanently at rated load.
Can I adjust the output voltage?
Yes, at the potentiometer next to the terminal strip in the range 4.5 to 5.5 V. Only adjust so far that the load receives the voltage stated by its manufacturer.
Is the power supply noisy?
No, it has no fan. It dissipates its heat via the aluminium plate it is mounted on.
Which standards has the unit been tested to?
According to the manufacturer, UL 62368-1 and — tested by TÜV — EN 62368-1. The details are in the datasheet in the Documents section.
