Addressable RGB pixel string using WS2811 data (single-wire NZR) for 5 V installations. In 5 V systems, clean results depend primarily on power distribution, power injection and a solid GND reference.

WS2811 – protocol & technical basics

WS2811 is a widely used standard for digitally addressable RGB pixels. Data is transmitted via single-wire NZR (typically up to 800 kHz). Each pixel reads its portion of the data (commonly 24 bit) and forwards the remaining stream to the next pixel in the chain.

Test setup: start at 20–30% brightness, then increase step by step. This helps separate power issues (ΔU) from signal issues.

Outdoor & connector systems

Pixels are IP68 (potted). For long-term outdoor installations, the connector system and mechanics matter as well. xConnect® is typically designed for robust outdoor plug connections. JST-SM is common in compact setups, but outdoors it usually needs additional sealing (heat shrink/gel/housing) and strain relief.

How long is the string at 10 cm pitch?

At 10 cm (4") pitch, length mainly depends on pixel count: 50 pixels ≈ 5 m, 100 pixels ≈ 10 m – plus lead wires (variant-dependent).

When do I need power injection at 5V?

When voltage at the end of a power segment drops too far under load (visible dimming/colour shift) or measurements indicate it. Key factors: pixel count, brightness, cable runs, gauge and topology. Best practice: measure under load and place injection points accordingly.

Which connector should I choose – JST-SM or xConnect®?

Choose the connector that matches your controller/extension ecosystem. For plug-and-play outdoor connections, xConnect® is typically the robust option. JST-SM usually requires additional sealing and strain relief for outdoor use.

What should I check first if the string flickers?

1) shared GND between controller/injection/string, 2) direction (DIN/DO), 3) voltage under load at the first and last pixel, 4) controller-to-first-pixel run (too long) and signal conditioning.
