12 volts, 3.34 amps, IP67 — LED driver for indoor and outdoor use
The MEAN WELL LPF-40-12 is an LED power supply with constant voltage and constant current: 12 V, up to 3.34 A, 40 W. The plastic case is fully encapsulated to IP67 and double insulated (protection class II, no earth conductor), the driver is cooled without a fan and is connected via connection leads. Mean Well explicitly names decorative LED lighting and illuminated signs as applications.

What this power supply is made for
- 12 V LED strips, 12 V pixels and decorative LED lighting — also outdoors
- Illuminated signs and moving signs, LED panels and downlights
- Universal input 90–305 V AC with active PFC

What it is not for
- 5 V pixels — see the 5 volt power supplies
- Installations where voltage or current must be adjusted: both values are fixed
- Continuous operation directly on the mains: according to Mean Well only operate behind a switch, not permanently connected to the mains
- Connection by non-specialists: the 230 V mains connection must be made by a qualified electrician
Also required: a mains switch in front of the driver, a connection of the leads with a suitable protection rating and fusing of the output.

Protected and monitored
- Short circuit: hiccup mode, recovers automatically once the fault is removed
- Overcurrent: constant current limiting at 95–108 % of rated current; between 7.2 and 12 V the driver works as a constant current source

- Efficiency typ. 84 %, ripple max. 150 mVp-p, tolerance ±4 %
Connection
Up and running in four steps
- Work de-energised. Before any installation, disconnect the system from the mains and secure it against being switched back on.
- Mount. Screw it down via the mounting tabs and keep 10–15 cm away from other heat sources. The temperature at the Tc measuring point must not exceed +80 °C; derating per the datasheet.
- Connect the output. Red lead to +V, black lead to −V. Choose the cross-section of the onward wiring according to the current and fuse the output; outdoors, make the connection watertight.
- Connect the mains and switch on. Brown lead to L, blue to N — via a switch. There is no earth conductor, the unit is double insulated. After switching on, measure the voltage at the load.
Caution: The output voltage is fixed at 12 V. Before connecting, check that your LEDs or pixels are rated for 12 V.

Safety instructions
- Risk of electric shock: installation and mains connection by a qualified electrician only; do not open the case.
- Protection rating IP67: suitable for indoor and outdoor use. The connections of the leads must reach the same protection rating.
- Case temperature (Tc) −40 to +80 °C; at high temperatures the load must be reduced (curve in the datasheet).
- Output current and output power must not exceed the rated values (3.34 A, 40 W).
- According to the manufacturer, only operate behind a switch, not permanently connected to the mains.
- The driver is a component for installation in end equipment; electromagnetic compatibility must be re-verified in the finished installation.

Frequently asked questions
What does constant voltage plus constant current mean?
Up to rated current, the driver keeps the output voltage constant at 12 V — as LED strips and pixels need. If the load draws more, it limits the current and works as a constant current source between 7.2 and 12 V.
Can I adjust voltage or current?
No. The LPF-40-12 has a fixed output voltage of 12 V (tolerance ±4 %) and no potentiometers.
Can I use the driver outdoors?
Yes. The case is fully encapsulated to IP67 and suitable for indoor and outdoor use. You have to make the connections of the leads watertight yourself.
Which standards has the unit been tested to?
According to the manufacturer, EN 61347-1 and EN 61347-2-13 (LED control gear, ENEC) and UL 8750. The details are in the datasheet in the Documents section.
