5 volts, 60 amps, 41 mm flat — power for large 5 V pixel installations
The MEAN WELL HRP-300-5 delivers 300 W at 5 V, enough current for around 1,000 RGB pixels at full brightness. It is an enclosed built-in power supply in a metal case with universal input, active power factor correction and a load-controlled fan. With a height of only 41 mm it also fits into flat prop bases, distribution boxes and enclosures.

Is it right for my project?
What this power supply is made for
- 5 V pixels and 5 V pixel strips such as WS2812B, SK6812 or APA102 — one power supply for a larger installation instead of many small ones
- Installation in props, bases and control cabinets with little height: 199 × 105 × 41 mm
- Universal input 85–264 V AC — the same unit for mains networks worldwide
- Exact voltage at the load: output adjustable from 4.3 to 5.8 V, remote sense lines (+S/−S) compensate for the voltage drop on the supply line
What it is not for
- 12 V or 24 V pixels — there are dedicated power supplies for these, for example the HRP-300-12 or the 12 volt power supplies
- Smaller installations: a smaller unit from the 5 volt power supplies will do
- Outdoor use, damp environments or operation without an enclosure: it is a built-in power supply for dry rooms, not a weatherproof device
- Connection by laypersons: the 230 V mains connection must be made by a qualified electrician
Also required: a mains supply cable with protective earth, a suitable enclosure or
mounting location that provides protection against contact, and fusing of the pixel strings. Pixels,

Seven screw terminals, clearly separated
- Mains side: L, N and protective earth (FG)
- Output: two −V and two +V — distribute the 60 A across both terminal pairs
- Connector CN100 additionally provides the DC-OK signal and the remote sense connections +S and −S
- Output voltage adjustable with the potentiometer next to the terminal strip
Protected and temperature-controlled
- Overload: current limiting from 105–135 % of rated power, recovers automatically
- Overvoltage: shutdown at 6–7 V on the output, restart by switching off and on again
- Overtemperature: shutdown, then automatic restart
- The fan switches on depending on load and temperature
Connection
Up and running in four steps
- Work de-energised. Before any installation, disconnect the system from the mains and secure it against being switched back on.
- Mount. The standard mounting position is horizontal — other positions require derating according to the datasheet. Keep the fan and ventilation openings clear and maintain 10–15 cm distance to other heat sources. Use mounting screws only of the length specified in the datasheet.
- Connect the output. Pixel strings to −V and +V, distributing the current across both terminal pairs. Choose the conductor cross-section according to the current per cable — the table is in the installation manual; fuse each feed individually.
- Connect the mains and switch on. Connect L, N and protective earth; the protective earth (FG) must be connected to earth. After switching on, measure the voltage at the load and adjust it with the potentiometer if necessary.
Caution: The output voltage must match your pixels — 5 V pixels do not tolerate
overvoltage. Never set the potentiometer above the value specified by the pixel manufacturer.

Safety instructions
- Risk of electric shock: installation and mains connection only by a qualified electrician; have faults checked by a qualified person. Do not open the case.
- Do not install in places with high humidity or near water.
- Do not operate at high ambient temperatures or near sources of fire. Operating temperature −40 to +70 °C; at high temperatures and in non-standard mounting positions the power must be reduced (derating curve in the datasheet).
- Output current and output power must not exceed the rated values (60 A, 300 W).
- The power supply is a component for installation in end equipment; electromagnetic compatibility must be verified again in the finished installation.

Frequently asked questions
How many pixels can I power with it?
As a rule of thumb, an RGB pixel draws around 60 mA at full white brightness. 60 A is
therefore enough for about 1,000 pixels. In operation with colours and dimmed effects the current is usually
much lower; the pixel manufacturer's specifications are decisive. Plan some headroom rather than running the
power supply permanently at rated load.
Do I need to inject power at several points?
As a rule, yes. At 5 V the voltage drops quickly on long strings, and the pixels at the
end become dimmer or change colour. Therefore inject power at several points and fuse each feed individually.
The remote sense lines +S/−S compensate for the voltage drop on the supply line to the injection point, not
for the drop within the string.
Can I adjust the output voltage?
Yes, with the potentiometer next to the terminal strip in the range 4.3 to 5.8 V. Only
adjust it so far that the voltage specified by the pixel manufacturer is present at the pixels.
Is the power supply noisy?
The fan does not run permanently but switches on depending on load and temperature. At
low load and in a cool environment it stays off.
Which standards has the unit been tested to?
According to the manufacturer, to UL 62368-1 and — tested by TÜV — to EN 62368-1. The
