LED pixels outdoors

What do I need for LED pixels to last outdoors?

Outdoors, every part needs the right protection rating: pixel strings are potted to IP68, choose pixel strips with IP67 and power supplies with IP67. Controllers and power supplies without an IP rating belong in a weatherproof enclosure. Also check the operating temperature: the pixels are specified for −15 to +60 °C.

Note: Connection to 230 V must be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Protection rating and temperature at a glance

Component Protection rating Operating temperature
Pixel strings 12 mm IP68 −15 to +60 °C
Pixel strips IP30, IP65 or IP67 −15 to +60 °C
xConnect® connectors, extensions, T-connectors IP65 −40 to +120 °C
Power supplies, fully potted IP67 (HLG-320H: IP65) depends on model, see item
Power supplies in metal housing no IP rating, for installation depends on model, see item
PixLite controllers and receivers no IP rating; E series designed for indoor use as standard −10 to +70 °C depending on model

Pixels and strips

The pixel strings are potted to IP68. For pixel strips, the location decides: IP30 for dry indoor rooms, IP65 against dust and water jets, IP67 for outdoor use.

Connectors and power injection

The xConnect® connectors, extensions and T-connectors are rated IP65 and specified for −40 to +120 °C. Everything under Connectors & cables.

Power supplies outdoors

Power supplies rated IP67 have a fully potted housing and are suitable for outdoor use. Power supplies in a metal housing without an IP rating are intended for installation and must be protected from moisture. How big the power supply needs to be is explained in the guide Calculating the power supply.

Controllers

The PixLite E series is designed for indoor use as standard. With conformal coating it can also be used outdoors if it is additionally mounted in a weatherproof enclosure. No protection rating is specified for the other controllers and the receivers: plan a weatherproof enclosure for them as well.
