WS2811 RGB Pixel String (12 V DC) – 12 mm Bullet, 10 cm Pitch, IP68

Addressable RGB pixel string using WS2811 (single-wire NZR) for 12 V installations. For stable, repeatable results, proper power distribution, sensible injection points, and a continuous GND reference between controller, PSU and string are key.

WS2811 – protocol & technical basics

WS2811 is a widely used standard for digitally addressable RGB pixels. Data is transmitted as single-wire NZR (typically up to 800 kHz). Each pixel consumes its portion of data (typically 24 bit) and forwards the remaining stream to the next pixel in the daisy-chain.

Rule of thumb: ΔV = I · R (consider both outgoing and return conductors). Practical approach: measure voltage under load at the start and end of each power segment and derive injection points from that.

WS2811 data signal & system integration

Signal: single-wire NZR; daisy-chain (pixel consumes data and forwards the rest)
GND reference: common ground between controller, injection and string is mandatory
Controller → first pixel: keep as short as possible; for long runs, buffering/signal conditioning is common
Direction: observe DIN/DO (marking/arrow) or the string will not respond
Topology: structure larger builds into power segments; route data according to controller design

Outdoor & connectors

The pixels are IP68 (potted). For long-term outdoor installations, the connector system and mechanical build quality are also important. xConnect® is typically designed for robust outdoor plug connections. JST-SM is widely used, but outdoors it usually requires additional sealing (e.g. heat shrink/gel/enclosure) and proper strain relief depending on the installation.

How long is a string with 10 cm pitch?

With a 10 cm (4") pitch, the length is primarily determined by pixel count: 50 pixels ≈ 5 m, 100 pixels ≈ 10 m – plus lead wires (depending on variant).

When do I need power injection?

When voltage at the end of a power segment drops too far under load (visible: dimming/unstable colours) or measurements confirm it. Key factors are pixel count, brightness, cable lengths, gauge and topology. Recommendation: measure under load and derive injection points from data.

Which connector should I choose – JST-SM or xConnect®?

Choose the connector that matches your controller/extension system. For plug-and-play outdoor connections, xConnect® is typically the more robust option. JST usually needs additional sealing and strain relief for outdoor use.

What should I check first if I see flicker?

1) common ground (GND) between controller/injection/string, 2) signal direction (DIN/DO), 3) voltage under load at the first and last pixel, 4) controller-to-first-pixel lead length (too long) / signal conditioning.
